Herbal Medicine

The term Chinese herbal medicine describes formulas which are made up from the roots, stems, bark, leaves, seeds and flowers of  wild and cultivated plants.   There are over 300 Chinese herbs in common use. Chinese Herbal Medicine is a very intricate and complex therapy and is used even more widely in China than Acupuncture.  Its aim is to regulate the internal organs and to boost the immune system.  It can also be used for the prevention of diseases and for health preservation.

Traditionally, Chinese herbs are prepared by the patient (boiled and then simmered in water) and taken as a tea. The herbal prescription will be carefully chosen specifically for each patient, and may consist of up to 12 different herbs.  Even where two patients have the same medical condition the prescribed formulas will be modified to suit the individual cases.  Besides the traditional   method of brewing herbal teas, Chinese herbs can now be taken in a  modern and convenient way as capsules,  pills or in patent form.

Some people are worried over the safety of certain Chinese herbal products,  and are also concerned  that traditionally Chinese medicine included  animal parts.  When herbal medicine is prescribed by an experienced herbalist it is an effective and safe remedy.  We source our herbs and herbal products only from companies who observe the highest standards of safety and quality, and would assure you that we use no  animal parts.  The doctor believes that they can be substituted with plant based herbs which  have the same therapeutic effects.
